Marcello Mastroianni (8 1/2, La Dolce Vita) delivers one of his finest performances in Henry IV, a breathtakingly powerful adaptation of the play by Luigi Pirandello. Claudia Cardinale co-stars in the film gorgeously directed by Marco Bellocchio. A playful musical score is provided by Astor Piazzola ("the single most important figure in the history of tango" -All Music Guide).
Mastroianni stars as a modern aristocrat. After he falls off his horse, he believes himself to be Henry IV, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. For years, everyone around him adapts to this fantasy. They create a separate world-a sort of unending Renaissance Fair where everyone dresses up and calls each other by names ripped from the history books. Then, one day, some old friends try to cure "Henry".
