About Us
Keeping Cinema Alive, One Disc at a Time.
Welcome to CafeDVD. Since 1999, we have had a single, enduring mission: to provide movie lovers with the films they actually want to see, not just what’s trending on a streaming algorithm.
Born in the heart of Silicon Valley during the height of the dot-com boom, we started with a simple idea—delivering movies directly to your door. More than two decades later, technology has changed, but our philosophy hasn't. We believe that the history of cinema is too important to be lost to digital licensing deals and rotating streaming libraries.
Our Story
CafeDVD was founded in San Jose, California, in 1999. While other rental services have come and gone (or pivoted entirely to streaming), we stayed the course. We survived the dot-com bubble, the rise of kiosks, and the "streaming wars" by sticking to what we do best: curating a massive library of physical media and treating our members like real people, not data points.
Today, from our headquarter in Palo Alto, we continue to serve a dedicated community of cinephiles across the United States. We are proud to be one of the few standing guardians of the "DVD-by-mail" tradition, bridging the gap between the golden age of rental stores and the modern convenience of online ordering.
Why We Are Different
In an era where movies disappear from streaming platforms without warning, physical media is the only way to guarantee access to the films you love.
- The Archive: With over 60,000 titles, our collection goes where streamers can't. From the latest Hollywood blockbusters to obscure foreign films, out-of-print classics, Criterion Collection essentials, and rare TV series, our shelves are stocked with the diversity that cinema deserves.
- Human Curation: We don't rely on "because you watched this" algorithms. We are a team of movie buffs who listen to our customers. Many of the titles in our library were added because a member specifically requested them.
- Flexibility: Whether you are a binge-watcher who needs a monthly subscription or a casual viewer looking for a single-disc rental, we have a plan that fits your life. No late fees, no due dates on subscriptions—just movies.
The Future of Physical Media
When Netflix announced the end of their DVD service, we knew our job was more important than ever. We recently launched CafeDVD 2.0, a modernized web experience designed to make browsing, queuing, and renting easier than ever.
We aren't just a rental service; we are a preservation effort. Every time you rent a disc from us, you are casting a vote for physical media, supporting the availability of rare art and films. Thanks to the generous support of our members, our 60,000-title collection continues to expand.
Join us in keeping the movie night tradition alive.
