The Archives Of War is a fascinating six-program collection of wartime images ranging from the trenches of World War I, through the unparalleled destruction of World War II, to the Cold War's atomic arsenals. Most of this material, shot on 35mm film by British Pathe News, has never been seen by U.S. audiences. Thus it offers a fresh visual treatment of the major conflicts of the 20th century.

Program 1: World War I and the Interwar Years includes the silent film classic The Battle of Ypres.Produced in 1925, the film chronicles the three terrible World War I battles fought near the Belgian town of Ypres (pronounced "wipers" by the British soldiers who fought and died there). The film was distributed in Europe but never released in the United States. Now, more than 70 years after it was made, this rediscovered classic appears for the first time in this country as part of the Archives of War collection.

This volume also includes material on the treatment of "war neurosis," the rise of Nazi power, the Spanish Civil War and the Sino-Japanese War.

Program 2: World War II - The Leaders documents the most powerful men involved with the most destructive war in history. From Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Emperor Hirohito to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin, witness their public appearances and judge public reaction to their crucial roles in history.
