Hawaiian Rainbow Examines Hawaii's traditional chants, percussion, ukulele, slack-key and a steel guitar, male and female falsetto, and luah vocal harmonica, all of them accompanied by authentic Hawaiian hula. Featured performers include: kumn hula Vicky Holt Takamine and Pua Ali'l 'llima, Raymond and Elodia Kane, Anntie Genoa Keawe, the Sam Bernard Trio, The Makaha Sona fo Ni'ihan, the Ho'opi'I Brothers. Jerry Santos and Haunnani Apoliano,Andy Cummings, Violet Pahn Liliko'I, Billy Hew Leu, Michael Kahikina, and Lehua Dance Company. Also appearing are poet Puanani Burgess, radio personality Brickwood Galuteria, ethnomusicologist Dr. Richardo D. Trimillos, and author-editor Dr. george S. Kanahele. Kumu Hula: Keepers Of A Culture The hula is the dance of the Hawaiian people and has been practiced since early Polynesians arrived in the islands around 500AD. Passed on from generation to generation by kahuna (priests and sages) and by kumu hula (master teachers), the hula has also been suppressed by 19th century missionaries and plantation owners, distorted by Hollywood movies, and exploited by the local tourist industry.
