Joan Crawford was little scared of her role in Rain (1932), adapted from Maugham's "Miss Thompson," fearing comparison with earlier Sadie Thompsons such as Gloria Swanson. She also didn't get along with director Lewis Milestone and hated the Catalina Island location. But she's very good in a showy role, and Walter Huston gives one of his best performances as the religious zealot. Milestone tells the story visually (the camera actually moves!), the racy subject matter isn't glossed over and dialogue is kept to what's essential. All of which help Rain avoid the static chattiness of most early Talkies.
