Mills' Gillie leads the lonely life of a tomboy who is isolated from her playmates. Her life is changed when she sees Korchinsky(Horst Buchholz, of The Magnificent Seven), a Polish seaman, murder his girlfriend(Yvonne Mitchell) when he finds her with another man. She finds the gun that he used, but won't turn it in, preferring to use it to impress the boys with whom she plays. Gillie is ultimately caught between Superintendent Graham(Sir John Mills-Hayley's father), the officer in charge of the case, and the murderer, with whom she forms a friendship.
