The last work in Mozart's short but prolific life is surrounded by mystery and legend. Having almost completed Die Zauberflote in July 1791, Mozart received a commission to compose a "Requiem" from an anonymous patron. Haunted by the mysterious appearances of this stranger, Mozart set about composing a requiem, which the ailing composer believed was for himself. Whether the anonymous commissioner, now known to be a certain Count F. von Walsegg, intended to pass the work off as his own as a requiem for his late wife still remains a mystery. Mozart did not finish the work before his death in December of that year but, as completed by his student Sussmayer, it remains a truly moving mass for the dead, which is frequently performed by choirs around the world.
This performance, from the Herkulessaal, Munich, conducted by Colin Davis, is given by the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, with soloists Edith Mathis (soprano), Trudeliese Schmidt (alto), Peter Schreier (tenor) and Gwynne Howell (bass).
