In the early 1970s, following his crime spree and incarceration in Canada - subsequent escape from prison - Jacques Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) returns to his native France to continue his life of crime, while manipulating the media, government and law enforcers. Taken into police custody in France and facing justice for his crimes, Mesrine escapes a courtroom during sentencing, kidnapping the judge at gunpoint. Declared "Public Enemy Number 1" and eventually condemned to a maximum-security prison, he writes his memoirs and establishes himself as a household name and the anti-hero across France. Mesrine stages another daring escape and disappears into the lawless underworld, taunting the police and reinventing himself as a celebrity criminal through his savvy handling of the press. After such a monumental rise, comes the inevitable fall as the police close in, bringing the life of Jacques Mesrine to full bloody circle.
