Sensual Dona Flor is devoted to her husband, Vadinho, an unfaithful rascal, gambler, gigolo and drunk. However, something deep inside her keeps her from leaving him, the burning lust only he can satisfy.
On the Sunday of Carnaval, Vadinho dies while dancing wildly in the streets and Dona Flor's life collapses. After a year in mourning she marries the local pharmacist, a marriage which brings her the stability and the calm existence she never had and always wanted. However, this is not enough for her and she yearns for her dead husband.
Vadinho responds to her prayers by returning to her as a ghost. She suddenly finds herself with the two men, both of equal importance and each one able to satisfy different needs - a love triangle that ultimately ends up in the perfect arrangement.
