Life is the ultimate performance.
Vaslav Nijinsky was one of the most celebrated dancer/choreographers of the 20th century, and undisputedly the greatest male dancer of his era. Yet at the height of his career - as with many artists ahead of their time - Nijinsky's modernist works fiercely divided the ballet world.
Directed by Paul Cox (Vincent: The Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh) and based on the diary Cahiers, Nijinsky explores the mind of a genius on the outer edge of reason. Through the use of visual imagery seen from Nijinsky's point of view, the film reflects salient moments of his life through the characters he danced as well as his personal relationships with his wife, daughter, in-laws, and his mentor/ lover, the notorious impresario Diaghelev.
Sir Derek Jacobi reads from the diaries as the voice of Nijinsky.
