Joao, (Sergei Lopez) a tacky Portuguese traveling salesman gives a lift to a woman (Carmen Maura) that never runs out of surprises, for she is, in turn, mysterious, sexy, and then, possibly insane. Wishing to run away to Lisboa with him, Joao initially accommodates to Berta but then has to deal with her maliciously psychotic family, closing in on them. With matters turning darker by the mile, a confused Joao finds that it all takes a nastier turn for the worse the moment husband Jose Luis (Federico Luppi), a chillingly unpleasant individual, finally catches up to them.
