From IFC Films and celebrated Danish filmmaker Kristian Levring (The King Is Alive) comes The Intended, a grippingly intimate, moodily atmospheric, sexually charged epic that has been lauded "a taut, noirish thriller that unfolds in a fever of firelit ambience" (Village Voice). Inspired by cinema's controversial Dogme 95 movement (co-founded by Levring and such acclaimed auteurs as Dogville's Lars von Trier), The Intended has drawn comparisons to the literary masterworks of Joseph Conrad and Tennessee Williams.
In 1924, the strong and idealistic Sarah (co-writer Janet McTeer) and her younger lover Hamish (JJ Field) flee the depression of post-war Europe, travel ling deep into the Malaysian jungle to earn their fortune at an ivory trading post. Instead of an exotic retreat, however, the two encounter an oppressively small colony where their high hopes and obvious love for each other unleash a downward spiral of greed, murder and madness: a lyrical tragedy where everyone in the community becomes the victim of each other's broken dreams.
Gripping, intimate, and heavily stylized, The Intended co-stars Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck, Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot), and Tony Maudsley (Bright Young Things).
