The Phantom Of The Opera: This classic silent film about a madman who terrorizes a Paris Opera House still packs a wallop today. The Phantom of the Opera story has been made into several movies and a hit Broadway play, but nothing comes close to the original hair raising version. A deranged and disfigured music lover hides himself in the sewers of Paris and only comes out at night to kill off the competition of a beautiful soprano performing at the Opera House. Lon Chaney is masterful as the Phantom, and the make-up is truly amazing. When the mask falls by the wayside, hold on tight for the scare of a lifetime. Phantom of the Opera is the original Beauty and the Beast, and is classic entertainment at its best!
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame: This film about a tortured, deformed, and victimized bell ringer was the first screen version of the classic work of literature written by renowned French author, Victor Hugo. Chaney studied medical books and interviewed countless individuals with physical impairments before he took on the role of the Hunchback, and the extra effort was well worth it! Audiences were so amazed at his performance that many believed it wasn't makeup at all, and that the Hunchback was a real person! Because of the strict confinement of the harnesses used to hold his legs in place, Chaney was plagued with severe pain for the rest of his life. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a classic silent film, but its message about man's inhumanity to man still speaks loudly today. A true masterpiece from the golden age of Hollywood.
