Sir John Balcombe, head of one of the country's largest privately owned companies-Curzon Industries- is found brutally murdered at his home, Balcombe Castle. When Morse and Lewis begin their investigations, the first thing they notice is that the Balcombe family show no signs of grief. They all seem more concerned with their own personal problems and the future of the business. The murder is also attracting considerable public attention and Morse is under pressure from his superiors to make an early statement to the press. The Chief Inspector dislikes the press attention he is receiving, but his mind is brought swiftly back to Balcombe Castle when a second murder occurs.
