This American Independent film is a skillful exploration of love, family and personal boundaries, a dramatic tale that covers two days in the lives of five very different people who all happen to share the same birthday. Ron is a minister who preaches conversion therapy while secretly lusting after men himself. Jim is an overweight gay man whose success at selling diet pills makes his low self-esteem and sadness. Kelly, distraught over a recent breakup with her girlfriend, obsesses over her old college roommate. Javed, disowned by his Islamic family because he is gay, is fighting to stay in America with his porn star boyfriend. And finally, there is Tracy who must hid her sexuality when her traditional Taiwanese mother comes for a visit. Overflowing with emotion and understanding, Happy Birthday is a rare look at the issues facing gays and lesbians as they attempt to navigate the rapid waters of life.
