An Overnight Success, Twenty Years In the Making.

David Carradine (Kill Bill and Bound for Glory), Michael Maloney (Truly, Madly, Deeply and Hamlet), and Mariel Hemingway (Manhattan and Deconstructing Harry) come together in this satirical buddy drama set in the dizzying whirl of fame at the heights of the music business. To screenwriters Scott Fivelson and Junior Burke, and director Mark Archer (prize-winning producer of In the Company of Men), it's all part of the American Reel.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet singer-songwriter James Lee Springer (David Carradine), whose uncompromising style has held him back for the past 20 years. "Why did it take you so long to make it?" is the question that keeps coming back at him. Springer wryly counters, "I keep punchin' out record executives."

Well... whatever the reason, he's now getting another shot, thanks to the efforts of his long-time best friend/manager, Jason Fields (Michael Maloney). But while Springer would prefer to let his musical vision and talents lead the way now that he's made it to the top, Fields is a pragmatist times 10 with a whole other idea of what it takes to stay there. The ultimatum Jason Fields lays on his friend is simple: "Are you gonna get real?"

With a great musical score by Thom Bishop, featuring songs written and performed by David Carradine, American Reel touches the mind and the heart in the way it asks, "When your dream finally comes true, is it still worth it?"
