Oscar-nominee Albert Finnet (Erin Brockovich) stars as irrepressible Uncle Silas in the Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of the nostalgic rural stories by H.E. Bates. At the turn of the 20th century, 10-year-old Edward (Joe Prospero) spends an idyllic summer with his rascally uncle in a bucolic English village. Also starring Sue Johnston (Brassed Off) as Silas' cantankerous housekeeper, Mrs. Betts.

A Happy Man-Edward is fascinated by Walter's war memorabilia while Silas worries that Walter's roses could challenge his own at the flower show.

The Christening-With her sumptuous food and other attributes, the widow Ellen arouses Silas' interest, but Mrs.Betts knows this time Silas has bitten off more than he can chew.
