Eleven-year-old Caddie Woodlawn and her family live in the Wisconsin frontier in 1865. Caddie's mother hopes that a summer visit from fashionable and well-mannered cousin Annabelle from Boston will encourage tomboy Caddie to become more of a refined young lady. But Caddie feels she and Annabelle have little in common. Meanwhile, Caddie is disturbed by a growing community hatred and mistrust of the peaceful Dakota Indians who live nearby. When false rumors against the Dakotas cause an uprising, and a mob threatens to attack the Dakotas' village, Caddie makes a courageous effort to save her Indian friends. Her action helps many to consider the cost of their prejudice and intolerance.
