Disc One:
Christina arrives to find the Russell family an unhappy group, divided by bitterness, jealousy and intolerance - brother against brother, father against son. On the insistence of her uncle, she is taught to ride and to love horses. She is delighted by the wind in her hair and the thrill of the chase. At the same time, she is drawn towards the quiet-spoken authority and the sense of excitement generated by her cousin William and his dreams of flying. Christina learns that her favorite horse, Sweetbriar, will never hunt again after a bad fall caused by Mark's selfishness. Uncle Russell announces that the horse must be slaughtered and fed to the hounds. Christina is heartbroken and determined to save Sweetbriar. Meanwhile, William and his friends put the finishing touches to 'Emma', the flying machine which William will pilot on its maiden flight, a dangerous undertaking.
Disc Two:
It is now 1912 and after upsetting his father yet again, William decides to pack his bags for good and seek his fortune in the world of aviation. William returns to take Christina to the Hunt Ball, but the feud between William and his father comes to a head. Now, he and Christina leave Flambards to pursue their dreams. William discovers that, despite his obvious technical and creative talent, getting a job will be far from easy. William finally lands himself a job at Elm Park Flying School and Christina is living as a waitress at a local hotel. Romance, flying thrills and adventure are on the horizon for the young couple. Christina receives a proposal from William, but the couple come down to earth with the realization that they are both under age and Uncle Russell is hardly likely to give his consent to marriage.
Disc Three:
The death of Uncle Russell, follows so soon by the death of their friend Sandy in a flying accident, has deeply affected Christina. However this is 1914 and the dark storm clouds of World War One are looming ever closer.
William questions whether Christina wishes to go ahead with their marriage. Her swift reaction is that after waiting three years for him, she his hardly likely to let him go so easily. William and Christina become man and wife, but like everyone else living through the period, they face a very uncertain future. Christina is now the proud mother of a baby daughter. She also looks after Mark's illegitimate son, Tizzy and oversees the restoration of Flambards. The sudden and unexpected re-appearance of Mark, Flambards' rightful owner, thwarts Christina's intention to run the estate as a farm and their relationship begins to turn very sour.
