"Never Anything Short Of Spectacular" -The Chicago Sun Times
Experience the percussive intensity - the harmony of man and nature - the drummers of Kodo. Yoshiro Ohi, leader of Kodo, explains, "The nature of each season in Sado is so beautiful. But there are many other places with such natural beauty. What is unique to this island is that there is a perfect culture in addition to such natural beauty. The Island of Sado is the home of Kodo."
"Kodo" literally means "Drum Child," and the name comes from the sound of the Japanese word "kodo", or heartbeat, the basic rhythm of human beings. Members of Kodo believe that the sound of the drumbeat is the first sound that a baby hears inside the mother's womb, the very sound of the heart beating. By choosing the name Kodo for their music, they express the desire to beat the drum freely with no restraints, just like an innocent child. When they share this revelation with an audience through their stirring and powerful rhythms, the result is an experience like no other musical art form.
