For more than a quarter of a century, singer, songwriter, surrealist Mark E. Smith has been fronting The Fall, probably the most innovative band to come out of the 1970's northern punk scene, though Smith would never claim to be a punk. Challenging confrontational and distinctly eccentric, The Fall have never been afraid to push the envelope, yet have always managed to do so with natural, truly idiosyncratic flair. They remain peerless. For the record this DVD contains what many would call classic Fall. Perverted by Language has it all, from the paired rockabilly cacophony of their most loved early work to the spitfire, sneering wit of Mark E. Smith letting off steam between takes. The bonus footage is taken from a barn-storming show recorded at Leeds University in 1981 with Mark E. Smith, Craig Scanlon, Steve Hanley, Paul Hanley and Karl Burns.
