Valery Gergiev is the Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and has almost single-handedly made St. Petersburg's Kirov Opera a household name. Gergiev is an exiting interpreter of Russian symphonic repertoire and has revived world attention to Prokofiev's music. Of particular interest is The Scythian Suite, which is based on ancient folk tales from the same region of the Caucasus where Gergiev has his roots, Ossetia.
