A Ruff Guide is an essential tool into the world of the trip-hop genre. Most importantly it is a chronicle of videos from Tricky, one of the most critically acclaimed artists of the '90s, who pioneered this unique genre which is presented here for the first time on DVD and in 5.1 surround sound. Originally a member of the Wild Bunch, which eventually transformed into Massive Attack during the early '90s, Tricky provided pivotal raps on the groundbreaking 1992 Massive Attack album Blue Lines. Soon afterward, Tricky began his solo career with long-time musical collaborator Martina and released his debut album Maxinquaye in 1995.
Innovative in every way, Tricky surprised the UK charts by entering at number two with his debut album. Featured on this DVD are videos from the first six tracks including his first single from 1993 "Aftermath", "Ponderosa", "Hell Is Around The Corner" and a cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel". Continuing his journey into a realm of menacing noise and hallucinatory soundscapes, Tricky collaborated with a diverse cast including Terry Hall, Bjork, Neneh Cherry, Cath Coffrey, Dedi Madden and Alison Moyet on his secong unofficial album Nearly God. From that albumcame the video for the song "Poems" used in this video collection as a hidden bonus video. His next album Pre-Millenium Tension was a sonic exploration into which rhythms, raps, samples and guitars intertwined to produce dark, dramatic resonances of paranoia and claustrophobic dreams. Sounds intense, but the videos from this album "Christiansands", "Tricky Kid" and "Makes ME Wanna Die" are stellar visual aids to his sonic realm. Tricky's next installment Angels With Dirty Faces mirrors that of Pre-Millenium Tension with added layers of jungle loops, synthesizers and gospel. Two videos emerged from this album that are deeply connected to one another, "Money Greedy" ending where "Broken Homes", featuring PJ Harvey, begins. Collaborating on his fifth album Juxtapose with DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill and DMX's producer Grease, the sexy and melodic track "For Real" was created and brought forth the only video from this inventive piece of work included on this video collection.
Journeying through a visual medium tha DVD permits, Tricky fans everywhere now have the ability to view this innovative trip-hop pioneer at the touch of a button. Completely remastered to 5.1 surround generates another new frontier for fans to explore and the 52 minute documentary titled "Naked & Famous" gives meaning to this DVD being A Ruff Guide into the ominous world of Tricky.
