A Set Of Elegant Suites Composed For A River Journey

George Fredrick Handel's Water Music is performed in the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London. The musicians and dancers are in authentic Baroque costume complementing the magnificent period surroundings.

Performed by the English Bach Festival Orchestra, one of Britain's most outstanding.

July 17, 1717 George I gave an extravagant river party. The Royal Barge set sail followed by another barge containing 50 musicians. The music was composed especially for this occasion. From the clear division of the music into three distinct suites, likely the first suite was intended to accompany the river journey on the Chelsea, the second to form a backdrop to the meal, and the third to drift across the evening waters for the return to Whitehall.

Digitally recorded and mixed to capture the true essence of this magnificent production.
