It's suburban Baltimore 1959.In this town a man is not a man unless he is a WWII or Korean War veteran. Twelve year old Danny Himes (Gregory Smith), an agile, athletic boy, dreams of climbing a 203 foot radio tower in part to live-down the reputation of his father being a coward.Earl Himes (David Strathairn)did not serve in the military.It takes old man Langer (John Hurt),a tough, witty, chain-smoking, whiskey drinking character, who has come home to die, to help Danny learn the true meaning of courage.As Danny's father earns the respect and vindication of the community, a the young boy and the old man develop a bond that helps each of them through important passages of a man's life, that of bravery, friendship and death.
