A Masterpiece Theatre Presentation
From the early summer of 1943, England was home away from home for thousands of men of the United States Armed Services, as America's commitment to the war in Europe intensified.Set in a quiet, English, market town in 1943, We'll Meet Again explores the shattering effect on the local community caused by the arrival of a Bomber Group of the United States Eighth Air Force posted at a nearby airfield.
With the inevitable relationships blossoming or foundering between the gum-chewing, jitterbugging, overpaid and oversexed Yanks and the local girls, We'll Meet Again looks at the fragility of life and love in the face of opposition from parents and friends, against better judgment and out of impulse or loneliness.
Susannah York plays Helen Dereham, a doctor at the local hospital, a pillar of respectability and the epitome of the English country lady. Her life is forever altered by the arrival of the Yanks and an Ivy League playboy, Major James Kiley, played by Michael J. Shannon. Both are forced to accept love and responsibility for the actions of not only themselves, but also for the airmen and townspeople who look to them for guidance, leadership and understanding.
In the war-torn 1940's, it was a time for simple virtues and simple strengths, unhampered by doubts or reservations. We'll Meet Again, unashamedly romantic and nostalgic, looks at this very particular time in history, when British and American ideas and assumptions, conventions and customs, life and language, love and prejudice were changed forever.
