Unravelling The Mystery Of The Enigma Codes

Using rare archive footage and exclusive interviews, this series takes you to the heart of a war that was fought out far from the bombs and shells of any battlefront. A war that involved the brilliant skills of mathematicians and chess players. The war of the codebreakers.

Twice in 50 years the ability to crack the enemy's most secret codes, and so learn the battle plans of enemy commanders in the field, proved to be the vital factor in achieving victory.

Revealed here are the remarkable exploits of both American and British codebreakers and their immense contribution to victory in both Europe and the Pacific.

The story starts in the early years of this century and takes you inside Room 40, in London's Whitehall where the early British codebreakers penetrated the codes of the German battle fleet, and deciphered a series of vital messages that led to America coming into the war.

It moves on to Washington in the 20s, where the top secret American codebreaking unit was launched, led by two of the most brilliant codebreakers of all time. These men cracked the tough Japanese Purple Code, which could have prevented the attack on Pearl Harbor. We go behind the doors of the top secret Station X at Bletchley Park, to reveal for the first time that both British and American codebreakers combined to crack the supposedly impenetrable Enigma codemaking machine. Then see how the toughest code of them all, the Naval Enigma, was penetrated, which allowed the Royal Navy and American carrier patrols to break the stranglehold of the U-Boat Wolf Packs, that came close to bringing Britain to its knees.

While in the Pacific, American codebreakers labored round the clock to learn the secrets of the Japanese Naval Codes, and gave the beleaguered Admiral Nimitz, with just 3 carriers, the information he needed to win the Battle of Midway against the overwhelming might of the Japanese Battle Fleet, and turn the tide of war in the Pacific.

This is a series filled with action, intrigue, and with hitherto untold stories of the secret war of the codebreakers.
