Filmed on location in Natal, Zulu has been restored to its original widescreen format in a special edition that retains all of the breathtaking scenery and colorful action of this rousing historical epic.
After the 1879 Isandhlwana massacre of almost 1,500 British soldiers in Natal, Otto Witt (Lawrence of Arabia's Jack Hawkins) learns that 4,000 Zulus are about to attack his mission station at Rorke's Drift. Lieutenants Chard (Stanley Baker) and Bromhead (Michael Caine, in his first lead role) lead 100 men in its defense in "truly spectacular and exciting" battle scenes (Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide). Directed, co-produced, and co-written by Cy Endfield (Mysterious Island), with a strong supporting cast and music by John Barry of the James Bond films, it was followed by a 1979 prequel, Zulu Dawn.
