Tony (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a teenage patient, escapes from a hospital to follow a beautiful young woman he sees in the corridor. He follows her into the street, into dirty alleys and a world of drug addiction and petty crime.

Despite Tony's relentless pursuit and attempt to befriend her, Jane (Samantha Mathis) will have nothing to do with him - she has enough problems of her own.Feeling compelled Tony begins to insinuate himself into her life until she finds herself actually depending on him.Even though Jane treats him badly, he still tries to protect her as best as he can, watching over her when she sleeps. No longer the self-sufficient loner, Jane realizes she needs the love and companionship she has scorned.Tony needs her just as much. She discovers an inner strength she never knew she had and a capacity for real love and compassion that will provide solace and salvation for both.
