What do you do when the town you live in is no longer big enough to hold your dreams? This is the dilemma that faces dieter, the handsome young protagonist of Keith Froelich's mesmerizing feature film debut--The Toilers and the Wayfarers.Like many gay teenagers, Dieter and his friend Philip are trapped in a puritanical, small town existence that is slowly suffocating them. Life for both is a series of unpleasant encounters with sadistic gym coaches and domineering parents, contrasted with the lyrical moments they spend together skinny dipping down at the old swimming hole. Both boys are justly frightened by the sexual identity that sets them apart from their peers, even to the point of denying the truth to each other. But sixteen, simmering passions are easy to ignite, especially when they are fueled by the touch of your best buddy. And as this youthful mix is waiting to bubble over, dangerous new temptations will appear in the form of handsome and mysterious visitor from Germany named Udo. Dazzled to at last be living his American dream of cowboy hats and big convertibles, it's Udo's good-hearted recklessness that inspires both Dieter and Philip to take risks neither has dared before, and face consequences both will have to live with forever.
