Orfeu (1999)
Starring: Toni Garrido, Patricia Franca, Murilo Benicio
Director: Carlos Diegues
Category: Foreign
Studio: New Yorker
112 mins

From the highly acclaimed Brazilian Director Carlos Diegues(Bye Bye Brazil, Xica da Silva), featuring the music of one of Brazil's most legendary musicians Caetano Veloso, comes a cinematic spectacle capturing the vibrant colors, seductive samba music and visually tantalizing ambiance of Brazil's Carnaval.

Based on the play that inspired "Black Orpheus", Orfeu takes place in Carioca Hill, a dangerous slum in Rio De Janeiro. Orfeu, a charismatic and beloved samba musician, leads his school each year in the Carnaval parade, refusing to abandan the slums where he was raised.

When Orfeu falls in love with Euridice, and Indian girl visiting her aunt in Carioca Hill, he arouses the jealousy of his fiery mistress, forgotten lovers and childhood freind of Lucinho, now a brooding drug lord. Shifting from the unvarnished brutality of drug raids and lynch mobs to the glittering spectacle of Carnaval, this romantic, dynamically beautiful film is full of life and energy.
