Dreaming big runs in the family.
This enormously popular British comedy/ drama series made a star of Catherine Zeta-Jones (Traffic) who, in her first TV series, got more newspaper coverage than the Royal Family!
Set during the ever-sunny 1950s, this is the story of the indestructible Larkin family, headed by Sidney "Pop" Larkin (David Jason), a dreamer and schemer who has managed to avoid paying taxes throughout his working life.
The clan leads an idyllic (if flamboyant) life in the English countryside, coloured by the flirtatious ways of beautiful daughter Mariette (Zeta-Jones), Pop Larkin's never-ending supply of ill-fated entrepreneurial adventures and the fierce devotion of each family member to one another through good times and bad.
Based on the popular books by H.E. Bates and filmed in gorgeous locales around Kent, this series is a touching and often hilarious tribute to family life.
A Breath Of Fresh Air - Despite Pop's reservations about foreign food, the Larkins set off for Brittany having agreed that they definitely need a holiday.Unfortunately, things are not quite how Charlie remembers from his last visit before the war.Terrible food, the absence of port and awful weather greet their every move, but as usual, the sun finally shines down on the Larkins in more ways than one.
While Charlie decides to be more of a man to compete with the bronzed, muscular Frenchmen who flirt with Mariette, Pop also has to deal with admirers in the shape of Mademoiselle Dupont and the gorgeous Angela Snow.
Oh! To Be In England - It is a good week for the Larkin family when Mariette gives birth to a baby boy, John Blenheim Churchill Marlborough Charlton.Pop discovers Captain Broadbent is cheating his old aunt and sets out to teach him a lesson. Also, when the vicar comes around to discuss the christening of Oscar and John Blenheim, Ma and Pop Larkin are persuaded that they should have all of their children baptised.
On the drive to Canterbury, Pop Larkin bumps into his old friend, Fruity Pears, who is in a spot of bother with some louts and his funfair.Meanwhile, Mademoiselle Dupont is on her way to England for the christening, expecting to be staying in 'Milord' Larkin's large country house.
