A young, inexperienced reporter comes to a Northern California asylum for the criminally insane to interview a man who is about to be released twenty-five years after committing a double murder. Confronting a neurotic bureaucrat, who is overly protective of the inmates he ministers to, the reporter manages to cut through the red tape and come face-to-face with a man who laments having killed his own mother in cold blood.
