The young Aboriginal girl was killed in such a horrific way that the remote Australian town of Brooklyn Waters is left reeling. The person in custody for her murder is the last person anyone would suspect, but is he really the killer? Pulled into this web of death, deceit and tribal culture are police officer Vincent Burunga (Ernie Dingo) and Beth Ashton (Cate Blanchett), a young radio producer, recently arrived to escape a broken marriage.

Up to now, the white and black communities in Brooklyn Waters have co-existed peacefully. As Vincent's murder investigation uncovers disturbing questions, tensions are bubbling up. Also simmering beneath the surface is a growing passion between Beth and the troubled cop. Their journey to find the truth about the murder and about each other will take them into the most unforgiving regions of the Australian outback. What they discover there is the burning torch that threatens to set the deeply divided town ablaze.
