James Cagney is certainly one of the greatest actors of Hollywood's studio era. Here are three films from a body of work few can touch.
First is 1948's The Time of Your Life. Based on William Saroyan's play, it's a slice of life drama set in a San Francisco waterfront bar. H.C. Potter directed an ensemble cast that includes Cagney , William Bendix, Jeanne Cagney, Wayne Morris, Ward Bond and Broderick Crawford.
Something to Sing About (1937) lets Cagney do some of his great solo dancing for director Victor Schertzinger, whose score was nominated for an Oscar. Evelyn Daw, William Frawley and Dwight Frye lend able support. It was re-released in 1947 as Battling Hoofer.
Blood On The Sun (1945) puts Cagney, Sylvia Sydney and Robert Armstrong in an action film directed by Frank Lloyd. Set in Tokyo in the 20's, Cagney took Judo lessons for this role. It also won the black and white art direction Oscar that year.
