Here's more horror and suspense from Monogram Pictures and the pen of Edgar Wallace.
Argyle Production brought Bela Lugosi to London in1939 (aboard the Queen Mary) for The Dark Eyes Of London, based on Wallace's novel.Lugosi plays Dr. Orloff, who runs an insurance agency and is listed as the beneficiary on a number of policies.A victim's daughter gets a job at a home for the blind run by a Dr. Dearborn, also played by Lugosi. As her suspicion of Dearborn and Orloff builds, she finds herself menaced by Bela's horrible blind pawn, Jake.Monogram released this gruesome and brutal piece of mayhem stateside as The Human Monster in 1940.This DVD gives you both sets of credits and the trailer for The Human Monster.
Wallace also provided the source material (his novel The Ghost Of John Holling) for Monogram's Mystery Liner (1934).William Nigh crafted an excellent little mystery on the typical Monogram budget and schedule.Noah Beery is excellent as the captain and George "Gabby" Hayes plays a watchman -- clean-shaven!The film's tightly-woven plot involves murder and intrigue aboard a luxury liner.
