Men of courage men of greed fighting every towering danger of the Sequoia country and each other! From Warner Bros. the excitement - swept story of Jim Fallon, the Outsider and the roving land-giants of the great Northwest!
Kirk Douglas wasn't happy at Warner Brothers, and he owed them nine more pictures. So he offered to do The Big Trees (1952) with no pay in order to get out of his contract.Jack Warner couldn't say no.
Douglas is a smooth operator after the "mammoth redwood wilderness" that belongs to a religious sect in 1900 Northern California.Of course, Kirk eventually sees the error of his ways, transformed by the love of Eve Miller, and he leads the sect against the badguys. It's all wrapped up with a great runaway train sequence.
Director Felix Feist (The Devil Thumbs A Ride, Donovan's Brain) keeps things fast-paced, and he packs quite a bit into this 89 minutes. He also gives the supporting cast - Patrice Wymore, Edgar Buchanan and Alan Hale, Jr. - plenty to do.
The Big Trees is a remake of a 1938 WB film, Valley of the Giants (which was, in fact, a remake itself). And in spite of three weeks of location shooting (in technicolor from Bert Glennon), The Big Trees makes use of footage lifted from the previous film.
So Douglas got out from under Warners. And what came after The Big Trees? The Big Sky, naturally.
