Directed by silent film era pioneer Abel Gance, Lucrezia Borgia blazes onto the screen with the story of one of history's most ruthlessly ambitious families. With the same high style and exquisite care for detail that Gance demonstrated so breathtakingly in his classic Napoleon, Lucrezia Borgia has been called an exuberant display of Gance's extensive filmmaking prowess.

The Borgia family at the end of the 15th century brutally forces its way to power through nepotism and cold-blooded murders in an attempt to control the Holy Roman Empire.Lucrezia (Edwige Feuillere) marries a series of noblemen who are bumped off once their lands have been acquired.Cesare Borgia (Gabriel Gabrio) is Lucrezia's bestial, evil brother, and Savonarola (Antonin Artaud) is the fierce, unyielding priest whose opposition to the Borgia leads to widespread civil disorder.Machiavelli (Aime Clariond), author of The Prince, the preeminent study of men in power, narrates, viewing the Borgia satirically as an example of human greed.

Included on this DVD are two rarely seen shorter films directed by Gance. Au Secours! uses experimental editing and photography to illustrate a man's adventures in a haunted house.La Folie Du Docteur Tube is a highly advanced experimental comedy about a mad scientist who discovers a sneezing powder that can alter someone's physique. This film, which uses mirrors to create distorted images, is considered by many to be the first appearance of the avant-garde in French cinema.
