An Exploration of Paperboys and Their Place in American Culture

From the Filmmaker
"People often ask 'are there still paperboys?' To me, this is the underlying theme of the film: how traditions stay alive and how they mutate. I wanted to see if these kids were aware that they are part of a long tradition. Were they aware of how they were also changing that tradition? While doing the film I was excited to see how the almost Norman Rockwell image of the paperboy blended in with the contemporary Eminem influenced teenage boy. This hybrid of contemporary television/rap oriented teen and American icon of "good old days" is so full of contradictions that happily live together. We tried to look at these questions and answers through the small details of each kid's life. We tried to see the bigger cultural picture through the smaller, personal culture of each kid: where they live, what music they listen to, how they dress, what they value, what their rooms and houses look like, how they organize the world, what the think the past meant, and what they think the future will bring." -Mike Mills
