Part of the 2000 SEEN BY... series in which six directors filmed their vision of the night of December 31, 1999, Tsai Ming-Liang's film follows the activities of the two lone inhabitants, a man and a woman, of a dilapidated apartment building during the last week of 1999. Holing themselves in against the bizarre "cockroach virus," an epidemic that is causing the citizens of Taipei to behave like cockroaches. The two find their separate ways to pass the time, she by lip-synching to classic Hong Kong musicals and he by getting drunk. When a hole opens up in the man's floor, he and the woman are forced into contact with each other.
