This amazing tale of romance and intrigue begins with the arrival in Ruritania of Rudolph Rassendyll, an Englishman who looks remarkably like the King, King Rudolph.After a chance meeting, the King befriends Rassendyll and the Englishman is drawn into an attempted plot by the King's brother to usurp the throne.

The King is drugged just before his coronation, and Rassendyll has to impersonate him until he recovers - however, when the King is taken prisoner, the impersonation takes on a greater importance.
