The Story of a Woman's Shame!
Filmed on location in Germany, Carnival Story provides a good look at carny life in the Fifties.
Anne Baxter (who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1946 for The Razor's Edge) joins a traveling carnival troupe and falls for barker Steve Cochran (White Heat, Private Hell 36). Baxter goes on to become the carnival's star attraction, thanks to high dive artist Lyle Bettger, forming a love triangle that eventually leads to violence. George Nader and Jay C. Flippen lend strong support.
Carnival Story was produce by the King Brothers with Anscolor photography (and prints by Technicolor) from Ernest Haller, who won an Academy Award for his work on Gone with the Wind in 1939.
The German born director Kurt Neumann is primarily known today for his sci-fi classics Rocketship X-M (1950) and The Fly (1959). He also directed a slew of Tarzan pictures.
While Carnival Story was being shot, a German language version was filmed simultaneously. Also directed by Neumann, Rummelplatz Der Liebe, stars Curt Jergens. According to some sources, one or both of these carnival stories were shot in 3-D.
