This tough film noir tells the story of a brutal gangster (Dennis O'Keefe) who seeks revenge after being framed and sent to the slammer.With the help of an innocent woman he seduces, the ex-con carries out his murderous scheme of vengeance, eventually coming face-to-face with the pyromaniacal creep (Raymond Burr) responsible for his prison stay.The eerie music and the fatalistic narration by Claire Trevor create a mood that has seldom been equaled.Anthony Mann's taut direction and John Alton's brilliant photography combine to make this 'sleeper' a superb forerunner to the Peckinpah cult of violence and one of the most stylized of all film noirs.
